THE WORKS:
Two Large Copper Enamels-Panels by Amarillo Artist,
Emilio Caballero
TITLE: "Coronado in the Palo Duro Canyon" Numbers One & Two
DESCRIPTION: Each panel is composed of approximately 45 individual pieces of fired enamel on copper. The size of each panel is 18 inches by 8 feet. These were commissioned by the late Hosea Foster of Canyon, Texas in 1965 to Dr.
Emilio Caballero, professor and art department head at West Texas State University in Canyon. Caballero had completed a corner-panorama for the St. Ann's Church in Canyon in 1964, and when Foster admired those, he arranged for Caballero to create two for him, with the Palo Duro Canyon and The "Lighthouse" as a subject. Hosea Foster was a prominent businessman and owned an insurance agency, "The Hosea Foster Agency” which used the "Lighthouse" as a symbol for the business logo. These panels were created in 1965 and hung in his insurance office in Canyon. They were acquired after his death when the agency was sold. They remained there until 1978 when the agency was sold again. They have been in a private collection until this time.
THE ARTIST:
Emilio Caballero, retired 87 year old former professor and art department head at West Texas University in Canyon resides in Amarillo and was kind enough to assist in providing the provenance of these works. His most recent work was "The Flower Market" a 2001 commissioned piece purchased by The Texas Tech University system which may be seen in the university's new Texas Tech School of Medicine/Allied Health building , 1400 S. Coulter St in Amarillo. Another significant enamel on copper is located in the Amarillo Municipal building. Other large scale public works seem to have disappeared with the demise of some of the area's banks and savings & loan institutions. Many are still in private collections.
