January 2004

The Comfort Corps wants you! If you enjoy doing any sort of sewing, this active group of ladies provides many sewn and knitted/crocheted items for all ages in our community. They make baby items for the tiny newborns in the neonatal intensive care units, stocking caps for the elderly or homeless, lap robes, wheelchair pockets, and aprons for nursing home residents, covers for the delicate clothing in the TTU Museum’s Textile area, heart-shaped pillows for mastectomy patients, and cuddly rag doll friends for children in the hospital. These accomplished RSVP members can meet most any need that our community agencies have for handmade items.

One of the projects most appreciated in the cold winter months is the Warm Up America afghans put together from small pieces made by many hands. People from all over this area bring 7” x 9” crocheted or knitted squares to Pocket Full of Stitches, 4523 50th (in Sunshine Square). Several of our Comfort Corps members then pick up the squares from the store, package them in pleasing color combinations and work them together into lovely multi-colored afghans. The coverlets are then taken to the South Plains Food Bank for storage and distribution. This is a great use for any left over yarn you might have and the afghans are much appreciated for their colorful beauty and warmth.

If you are interested in keeping your skills proficient, think about joining the Comfort Corps. RSVP and funding from Xcel Energy provides the yarn and patterns-- you donate your time and talent. Projects are discussed, distributed and returned every fourth Wednesday of the month at 10:00 a.m. at the 19th St. Senior Center. Our next meeting will be January 28th. If you are homebound, you are also welcome to join RSVP and we will bring the materials to you. Just call 742-2423. Don’t let those fingers be idle when your community needs your skills!

OTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

SPECIAL OLYMPICS, 1318 13th St., would love to have volunteers who would help around their offices answering the phone and doing general office work on a regular basis. Several volunteers are also wanted as needed to help run the many special events they plan and execute for the young people in their program. The office is just east of First United Methodist Church and just across from the TNM&O bus station. Parking is right in front of the door.

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) at 916 Main Street, Room 425, trains volunteers to be able to speak for the best interest of children in foster care, helping to find them safe, permanent homes. While there is some flexibility to working with CASA there are scheduled meetings, hearings, and case related dealings during regular business hours. While the time commitment is not huge, 7-15 hours a month, the impact on the children's lives can be tremendous. CASA will begin training in early February 2004 for potential volunteers. There continue to be several dozen children in need of committed volunteer advocates. Would you consider being that powerful voice in a child's life and become a CASA volunteer!

To volunteer, or for more information about these or other volunteer positions, please call the RSVP office at 742-2423.

HOW do I join RSVP?
Becoming a member of RSVP is simple as long as you are at least 55 and have some time to volunteer. Just call the office at 742-2423 and chat with Ronda Casey or Bonne Phillips about your interests. If you are not certain what you would like to do, we can mention several current volunteer opportunities and send you a list of the sort of jobs which RSVP members are presently doing to whet your appetite. If you have a special skill or talent that you would like to utilize, we will search to find just the right job for you. Just mail in the enrollment for
m (requires Adobe Reader) and we will call you!
