You’ve heard of BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS? Think Big Grandmothers Big Grandfathers! You don’t have to be an expert on children, just a friend. Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest and largest youth mentoring organization in the United States, matching caring adults with children, ages five-to-15 years old, in one-to-one relationships. All you need is the willingness to spend time with someone who needs a friend. BBBS staff provides support and training as needed. The genesis of a match is that a parent, guardian or teacher believes that a child could benefit from the presence of an additional caring adult in his/her life. The parent or guardian gives permission for the child to participate.
National research has shown that the positive relationships between Big Brothers and Big Sisters and their Littles have a direct, measurable, and lasting impact on children’s lives. Research and anecdotal evidence show specifically that one-to-one mentoring helps at-risk youth overcome the many challenges they face. Little Brothers and Sisters are less likely to begin using illegal drugs, consume alcohol, skip school and classes, or engage in acts of violence. They have greater self-esteem, confidence in their schoolwork performance, and are able to get along better with their friends and families.
Big Brothers Big Sisters works closely with parents and guardians to match every child with the right Big. Every volunteer is screened, trained, and supervised, and professionals in youth development support each match to help ensure that the relationship will be safe and rewarding for everyone involved. Volunteers in Lubbock are needed to provide Littles with one-on-one time and attention in elementary schools, typically once a week during their lunch period. Teachers identify children who can benefit most from interaction with a caring adult. Volunteers mentor students by socializing, reading books or playing games in the school they attend. As their friendships evolve, volunteers and children discover ways to make school and learning fun.
How about helping to change the world--one child at a time?
OTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:
AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY’S Road to Recovery Program provides cancer patients with transportation to and from scheduled treatment appointments. Volunteer drivers are greatly needed to donate both their time and the use of their personal vehicles to assist patients. You would not be asked to assist wheelchair patients. Lack of transportation has become a major problem for many cancer patients. Many patients need daily or weekly treatments, often over a period of months, and they simply have no transportation. Although family and friends may be asked to help, sometimes there are just too many appointments for them to handle. Please consider helping a cancer patient to be a cancer survivor on the Road to Recovery.
FAMILY COACHING, 3305 81st Street, Suite H, works with families and individuals to provide intensive “coaching” sessions to resolve a crisis or conflict. All members of the family are included in the sessions taking place in a three or four day period, averaging between 20-30 hours. Their focus is to help families become cohesive and to help them to build strong family teams that will WIN at life. Potential coaches will be thoroughly trained to do this job and the training can be arranged to meet your schedule. Your caring help might be just what a family needs to handle the stresses of life.
