February 2007Lubbock RSVP
is going through another change. It is with great sadness that we must
say goodbye to Ronda Casey, the volunteer program coordinator. Ronda has
been with RSVP for fourteen years. She has been a valuable part of
everything that RSVP does. She is the person that keeps track of our
volunteers and their hours. She knows the history of RSVP in Lubbock.
The Lubbock RSVP is sponsored by Texas Tech University, College of Human
Sciences, and Ronda has a total of 23 years working with Tech, so she
knows the ‘ins and out’ of how the Texas Tech University system works.
Ronda has been essential in
helping me learn my job as the director of RSVP. I will miss her
expertise. She told me right before Christmas that she was planning to
retire January 31, 2007. Ronda has promised me she plans to remain
involved with RSVP as a volunteer and will continue to help with some
office duties until a new volunteer program coordinator can be hired.
The RSVP Advisory Council is
having a retirement reception for her on Wednesday, January 31st at the
Merket Alumni Center from 3:00 -4:30 pm. We wish Ronda a very happy
retirement. (If you are interested in applying for Ronda’s job, it is
listed on the Texas Tech employment website, or you can call our office
for more information.)
The RSVP Advisory Council is
sponsoring a contest for volunteers to recruit their friends and family
to become RSVP members. All new recruits must be placed and working in a
volunteer position by September 30, 2007. The winning recruiters will
receive their cash rewards, $75 for first place, $50 for second place,
at the recognition dinner in October. If you need enrollment forms
mailed to you, call our office at 742-2423. Be sure that your recruits
write your name on the “Referred by” line so you will get the credit as
the recruiter. In case of ties, a drawing will be held between the
winners.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:
Highland Hospital Auxiliary
needs volunteers for four hour shifts on week days from 8:30 am to 12
noon and from 12 noon to 4:30 pm. Volunteers deliver flowers and mail to
patients, do messenger service for hospital departments, answer phones,
and assist the families of patients in the surgery waiting rooms.
The Underwood Center for the
Arts needs a volunteer to sit at their reception desk on Tuesday
and/or Thursday mornings from 9 until noon. The volunteer will answer
the phone and greet visitors as they come into the office area.
Occasionally the volunteer will have little tasks to work on for the
Center, but they can also bring a book to read between calls or
visitors.
Lubbock Meals on Wheels
needs volunteers to continue to meet the needs of the homebound
population in Lubbock. In just an hour-long orientation you will be
trained to provide this valuable service. Delivering noontime meals once
a week usually takes little more than an hour of your time, but the
recipients will benefit greatly from the nutritious meal and the
friendly contact you bring to them.
To
volunteer, or for more information about these or other volunteer
positions, please call the RSVP office at 742-2423.
HOW do I join RSVP?
Becoming a member of RSVP is simple as long as you are at least 55 and have some time to volunteer. Just call the office at 742-2423 and chat with Ronda Casey or
Dana Bear about your interests. If you are not certain what you would like to do, we can mention several current volunteer opportunities and send you a list of the sort of jobs which RSVP members are presently doing to whet your appetite. If you have a special skill or talent that you would like to utilize, we will search to find just the right job for you. Just mail in the
enrollment form
(requires Adobe Reader) and we will call you!
