The Buddy Holly Center at 1801 Avenue G opened on September 3, 1999 in the historic Ft. Worth and Denver Train Depot in Lubbock. Its mission is to motivate public interest in contemporary visual arts and in the music and music history of this area. Exhibitions and programs reflect the diverse cultural characteristics of our region and encourage interaction between artists and the community. The Center collects, preserves and interprets artifacts relevant to Lubbock’s most famous native son, Buddy Holly, as well as to other performing artists and musicians of West Texas. Changing exhibitions in the visual arts provide an arena for celebrating the technical virtuosity and creative talents of fine artists at work in a region distinguished by vast distances and a rich tradition of creative resources. Additionally, the Buddy Holly Center is committed to creating learning opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds through exhibition tours, outreach programs, education initiatives and family activities.
The programs available at the Buddy Holly Center include:
- Buddy Holly
Gallery, a permanent exhibition on the life and music of Buddy
Holly
- Texas Musicians Hall of
Fame, which features changing exhibitions and programs on the music and music history of Texas and West
Texas
- Fine Arts Gallery, dedicated to changing contemporary visual arts
exhibitions
- Educational and Outreach
Program, including SMART (Summer Mission Art Reaching Texas), ArtCorps, and visiting artist programs. Workshops in contemporary art and music are held in locations throughout the city as well as at the Center.
The Buddy Holly Center Docent Program is seeking friendly people with an interest in history, music and visual arts for their volunteer docent program. You do not necessarily have to be an expert in art (though, in the course of volunteering, you are likely to become one!), but enthusiasm, commitment, a passion for learning, and a desire to share knowledge are essential. The Docent Program provides the public, especially school groups, with tours of the center. Training for each exhibition is provided and new volunteers receive special orientation sessions in order to become more familiar with the center and its programs. Enjoy a “blast from the past” and become a docent with the Buddy Holly Center!
OTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:
FAMILY COUNSELING SERVICES, #22 Briercroft Office Park, would appreciate some help with filing in their office. All you need to know is your ABCs! You could go in anytime from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday and just work as long as you would like. Once a week would be great, but any amount of time would help to alleviate the backlog of filing. Nice office and a nice lady to help—won’t you try it?
LUBBOCK SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, 1313 Broadway, Suite 2, would love a few volunteers who would help out in their office on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings from 9:00 a.m. until noon. Receptionist volunteers would need a pleasant telephone voice with the ability to transfer calls and/or take clear and concise messages, general copying and assembling and organizing large mail outs. During the morning, you would also need to meet and greet visitors to the office. Parking is very accessible to the building. Come be a part of this year’s Celebration of Community at the
LSO!
To volunteer, or for more information about these or other volunteer positions, please call the RSVP office at 742-2423.
