“The purpose of the
Lubbock Symphony Orchestra (LSO) is to enrich the greater community we serve through quality symphonic performances and educational experiences.” And what a great job they do! Each season from September through May, the LSO presents five pairs (10) of classical concerts, two Holiday Pops concerts, a pair of Spring Pops Concerts and 10 educational concerts, serving over 300,000 residents of West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. The LSO concerts reach out to all socio-economic backgrounds and cultures by presenting educational concerts each season to students in grades five through twelve in Lubbock and its surrounding areas. Also, LSO sends a representative string quartet into the local elementary schools for 30-minute interactive performances in grades one through four. Each spring an exciting family matinee event is scheduled with various learning activities for the children, including an instrument “petting zoo”. In 1988, the Lubbock Symphony organized the Lubbock Youth Orchestra. Today, more than 50 junior high and high school musicians from throughout the area are part of the next generation of classical musicians in Lubbock.
The Lubbock Symphony Orchestra is the oldest and largest non-profit arts organization on the South Plains. It was incorporated in 1946 with 35 volunteer musicians and since that time has had only four conductors - a measure of the success of the LSO and its artistic contribution to the community. Since 1967, orchestra members have been paid for their performances, and today 80 professionally trained musicians present an exciting array of classical music including six to eight concerts starring internationally acclaimed guest artists. The LSO has a full-time staff of six and two part-time employees who oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization, but volunteers are always needed for special events, mailings, etc. It you want to be a part of this exciting experience, join the LSO on-call volunteers!
OTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:
CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of the South
Plains. CASA volunteers are advocates for abused/neglected children in foster care. These children are not in the state’s custody because of something they did but because of something that was done to them. CASA volunteers are trained and court-appointed to investigate, monitor, report and serve as advocates in court for abused/neglected children’s best interests. While the time commitment is not huge, 5-15 hours a month, the impact CASA volunteers have on these children’s lives is immeasurable. CASA will hold volunteer training on March 3, 4, and 5 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The training will be held at 1706 23rd St., Conference Rm. Every child deserves to have someone looking out for them.
UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER’S
AUXILIARY, 602 Indiana Ave., is looking for volunteers that would be interested in making a difference in the lives of students by making popcorn for sale. All of the proceeds from the sales go toward a scholarship program to help students entering the medical field. Volunteers will pop the corn in the cafeteria for 4 hours once a week. There is not a lot of walking involved and you get to meet a lot of nice, interesting people. This is a fun opportunity. Please consider being part of the "pop corn team" and help a student get through the tough and expensive, but so important, medical field.
To volunteer, or for more information about these or other volunteer positions, please call the RSVP office at 742-2423.
