The LOUISE HOPKINS UNDERWOOD
CENTER FOR THE ARTS began as the Lubbock Regional Arts Center in
1997 with a core of individuals who had a clear understanding of the
importance that accessible cultural experiences and opportunities add to
the quality of life in a region. They developed the idea of building a
multi-purpose arts center that would be available and affordable to
local artists, arts groups and their audiences. By 2000, after much
planning and study, the Center was able to find and renovate its
permanent home at 511 Avenue K (across from the downtown post office).
In 2004,
because of a major anonymous donor with naming rights, the center was
renamed The Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts. Currently, the
Center provides a central home to foster all of the arts in the South
Plains region through education, exhibition and performance. By
featuring and supporting the works of all creative artists-visual,
performing, cultural, literary and others-from the region, the Underwood
Center helps to build and sustain an inclusive community through
diversity and multicultural awareness and promotes audience growth and
accessibility for the regional arts organizations. As funding is
secured, design development for the current 1½ block area will be
completed this year with a 3 block area envisioned for the ultimate arts
campus. A grand preview of the current renovations will be held in
conjunction with the We’re Off to See the Wizard fundraising gala
on March 4, 2006.
The Louise
Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts is an exciting ever-growing area
of our community in which you can be a part. Volunteers are now needed
in the office to greet people, answer the phone, and provide
information. You may work anytime, any day on your own schedule. Special
events also need volunteers, so if you would like to be a part of the
growth, development and celebration of the art world here in Lubbock,
think about donating some of your time to the Underwood Center. Talk
about expanding your horizons!
OTHER
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:
KTXT-TV
CHANNEL 5, 17th St. and Indiana Ave., is in need of volunteers to
operate cameras during its annual pledge drive from March 4 -19. There
are various shifts available and no experience is necessary because you
will be given plenty of on-the-job training. The director will tell you
where to focus through earphones that you wear when operating the
camera. Since only small segments of the pledge drive are local, much of
the time you would be able to sit and watch the programming. What a fun
opportunity for you to see how television works behind the scenes!
AREA AGENCY
ON AGING’S OMBUDSMAN PROGRAM is searching for volunteers to serve as
ombudsmen for long-term care center residents and advocate for quality
care for them. Ombudsmen represent residents and their families when a
complaint or concern arises. Comprehensive training is provided by the
AAA with support from the Texas Department on Aging, enabling
state-certified volunteers to adequately address the concerns of nursing
home residents. Nursing homes clients need support through regular
visits from people like YOU to insure their comfort and care.
To
volunteer, or for more information about these or other volunteer positions, please call the RSVP office at 742-2423.
HOW do I join RSVP?
Becoming a member of RSVP is simple as long as you are at least 55 and have some time to volunteer. Just call the office at 742-2423 and chat with Ronda Casey or Bonne Phillips about your interests. If you are not certain what you would like to do, we can mention several current volunteer opportunities and send you a list of the sort of jobs which RSVP members are presently doing to whet your appetite. If you have a special skill or talent that you would like to utilize, we will search to find just the right job for you. Just mail in the
