April 2007
Everyday it seems like I hear about another type of
scam. The last one I read about was in the Lubbock AJ. It described how
people were stealing the identity of the recently dead, and what not to
put in the obituary. I guess no one is safe! I also have talked to a
very sweet, college educated 84 year old lady, who told a repair man
that she was a ‘poor old widow woman’, and the repairman quickly figured
out how to milk her out of $1000.00 of home repair that she didn’t need,
and he didn’t do.
That’s why you need to make plans to attend the RSVP
Spring Forum. Our topics will deal with the scams, shams, and con
artists who are trying to steal your identity, your credit, your money
and your home. It is not the same world you and I grew up in; and we
must face up to that. This year the forum will be Thursday, April
19th, at the First Church of the Nazarene (Kid’s Gymnasium), at 6110
Chicago. Registration begins at 8:30, and the program is from 9:00 am to
1:00 pm. Since a mid-morning snack and a light lunch will be
provided, reservations are required. Seating will be limited. Make
your reservations soon by calling the Lubbock RSVP office at 742-2423.
All reservations must be made by April 17th.
Our speakers, coming from a variety of backgrounds,
include: Steve Sucsy, Assistant U.S. Attorney, Lubbock; Edda Paduch,
Social Security Administration Office; Nancy Gresham, Texas Attorney
General’s Office; a speaker from the Secret Service and a panel from
Lubbock Senior Resource Alliance to discuss medical fraud. We will also
have health and educational booths available for you to visit before and
after the forum, and during the breaks.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:
Do you love art? The Louse Hopkins Underwood
Center for the Arts at 511 Avenue K is looking for one or two
volunteers to sit at the reception desk on Tuesday and Thursday mornings
from 9 until noon. The volunteers will need to answer the phone and
greet visitors as they come into the office area. Occasionally, you may
have other small tasks to work on while there, but you may bring a book
to read in between calls or visitors.
The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center
School of Medicine, 3601 4th Street, needs volunteers to be escorts
and pathfinders at the lobby information desk. Able-bodied volunteers
may assist with wheelchairs if possible but not necessary. Volunteers
work one 3 to 4 hour shift one day a week (Monday – Friday) between the
hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Friends may volunteer in pairs.
Volunteers will attend a two hour orientation and work closely with
front desk employees who team with volunteers to provide a safe and
friendly environment for visitors, patients and students. This is a very
necessary volunteer position. Texas Tech does a lot for Lubbock. Let’s
give back to them.
The Muscular Dystrophy Association located at
4601 50th is looking for a volunteer to work one day a week for about 3
hours in the morning to do general office work such as typing
(computer), filing, copying, and answering the phone.
To
volunteer, or for more information about these or other volunteer
positions, please call the RSVP office at 742-2423.
HOW do I join RSVP?
Becoming a member of RSVP is simple as long as you are at least 55 and have some time to volunteer. Just call the office at 742-2423 and chat with Ronda Casey or
Dana Bear about your interests. If you are not certain what you would like to do, we can mention several current volunteer opportunities and send you a list of the sort of jobs which RSVP members are presently doing to whet your appetite. If you have a special skill or talent that you would like to utilize, we will search to find just the right job for you. Just mail in the
enrollment form
(requires Adobe Reader) and we will call you!
