Volunteer Opportunities:
CASA
is a Court Appointed Special Advocate serving as an independent voice in
court for abused and neglected children in the South Plains area.
The CASA volunteer helps secure a permanent placement for the child in a
safe and caring environment. You do not have to be a lawyer or
social worker to become a volunteer. During CASA training, you
will be given the tools to help you understand and work effectively
within the child welfare system.
Every year the state of Texas removes thousands of
children from their homes because of abuse and neglect. These
children are then dropped into an over-burdened child welfare system in
which a judge is charged with making life-impacting decisions for the
child. When there is a CASA on the case, the CASA can provide the
judge with a comprehensive picture of the child's situation. CASA
volunteers are frequently the most consistent adults in the lives of
these children.

Backyard Mission
was founded by Laurie Foster in 1983. Her heart for mission work
began when, as a high school student, she took a mission trip to
Appalachia to repair homes for impoverished families. Backyard
Mission seeks to provide free home repairs for low-income families and
elderly residents in Lubbock. Repairs focus on restoring a home to
a warm, dry condition. The work is accomplished through
volunteers, and the building materials are purchased through donated
funds. Typical repairs could include: roofing, siding,
painting, windows, doors, heaters, water heaters, ramps and simple
plumbing repairs. Retired volunteers are needed to help with light
repairs, to provide food/snacks for workers and/or possibly to adopt a
house. Repair/construction experience is not required; Backyard
Mission will gladly provide training. If you have a desire to
volunteer for Backyard Mission and help improve a family's safety and
quality of life, please contact RSVP at 742-2423.
To
volunteer, or for more information about these or other volunteer
positions, please call the RSVP office at 742-2423.
HOW do I join RSVP?
Becoming a member of RSVP is simple as long as you are at least 55 and have some time to volunteer. Just call the office at 742-2423 and chat with Karon McDowell about your interests. If
you are not certain what you would like to do, we can mention several current volunteer opportunities and send you a list of the sort of jobs which RSVP members are presently doing to whet your appetite. If you have a special skill or talent that you would like to utilize, we will search to find just the right job for you. Just mail in the
enrollment form
(requires Adobe Reader) and we will call you!
