Volunteer Opportunities:

For the past 25 years, the South Plains Food Bank has been working to feed the hungry, to give hope and to help people get back on their feet.

Last year SPFB provided food for more than 92,000 people across the South Plains.  SPFB works in partnership with over 230 churches and social service agencies in 21 counties that operate pantries, soup kitchens, senior citizens centers, produce drops and kids cafes to distribute over 6 million pounds of food.

Throughout the South Plains area, 3000 volunteers donate time each year to make food boxes, serve food, organize food drives, help grow and harvest apples and vegetables, and work with young people and families in need.  Through their donations of food, funds and time, SPFB provides the equivalent of 19,000 meals every week.  Without volunteers this would not be possible.

Every year the numbers increase, and the changing times are creating an even greater need to serve the hungry of our area.  Community agencies report seeing new faces every week.  Last year the demand for food increased by 20%.  Ironically, as this need has increased, the donation of food has decreased.

If you would like to learn more about the programs and services offered by SPFB and see the warehouse in operation, you are invited to a lunch and tour, offered on the 3rd Thursday of every month.  There is no charge for the lunch, but it is requested that you rsvp to let them know you will be attending.  Contact Karen or Lyn at 763-3003 or register online at www.SPFB.org .  The next lunch and tour is April 16th.  Volunteers are welcome to serve at both the SPFB and the Carolyn Lanier Farm.

To volunteer, or for more information about these or other volunteer positions, please call the RSVP office at 743-7787.

HOW do I join RSVP?

Becoming a member of RSVP is simple as long as you are at least 55 and have some time to volunteer. Just call the office at 743-77873 and chat with Karon McDowell about your interests. If you are not certain what you would like to do, we can mention several current volunteer opportunities and send you a list of the sort of jobs which RSVP members are presently doing to whet your appetite. If you have a special skill or talent that you would like to utilize, we will search to find just the right job for you. Just mail in the enrollment form (requires Adobe Reader) and we will call you!
