May 2005

Mother is 89, but wants to stay independent in her own home. You are worried that she may not be eating well, and are concerned that she may not be getting enough good nutrition to keep her healthy. LUBBOCK MEALS ON WHEELS is here to help her. She can stay in her home and get a good nutritious meal each day plus a visit from friendly volunteers. The mission statement of the organization says it all: “Respecting the dignity of every human being, no matter their need or physical condition, Lubbock Meals on Wheels will provide nutritious, home-delivered meals to those who are homebound, elderly, or disabled. We shall seek to break the social isolation experienced by the homebound, by providing warm, caring, friendly contact through our volunteers.”

Each meal is planned by a dietitian and contains a meat entrée, two servings of vegetables or fruits, a beverage, bread and/or dessert. Recipients are encouraged to donate what they can towards the cost of their meal, but contributions are made in accordance with their budgets. The program is funded by the citizens, churches, civic clubs, and businesses of Lubbock. Lubbock Meals on Wheels is not a United Way-funded agency, and they do not receive any government money. The criteria to receive the meals:

  1. A person must be homebound or need assistance to leave home.

  2. A person must be unable to prepare a well-balanced meal each day.

  3. A person must not have anyone who is available to prepare meals for him or her.

Right now, Lubbock Meals on Wheels desperately needs volunteers. In just an hour-long orientation, you will be trained to provide this valuable service to the community. Delivering noon time meals once a week, usually takes no more than an hour of your time, but homebound recipients will benefit greatly from the nutritious meal and the friendly, caring contact you bring to them.

OTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

SPAG/AREA AGENCY ON AGING, 58th and Avenue P, is very much in need of volunteers to file information in their offices. You may work on your schedule at your pace anytime of the week you choose. People are also needed to answer the phones during the day if you would have a few hours you might go in and help. This is a great place to pick up a lot of information that can help you in life—and a place that would really appreciate your assistance.

BREEDLOVE DEHYDRATION CENTER, North MLK and Loop 289, would appreciate a volunteer receptionist who could answer the phone and greet their many visitors from 11:30 until 3:00 any day you could help out. This is the only vegetable dehydration facility in the world solely dedicated to providing products to those who cannot provide food for themselves. Visitors from all over the world want to see how this is done and you will be there to welcome them.

To volunteer, or for more information about these or other volunteer positions, please call the RSVP office at 742-2423.
