May 2008

Communities In Schools On the South Plains, Barnes and Noble, and The Lubbock Centennial Committee invite you to join with Operation Paperback in supporting our troops overseas.  This endeavor began in Lubbock in 1999.  Operation Paperback collects books and sends them to American troops deployed overseas.  The campaign takes place May 1 through May 28, 2008, and the collection site is Barnes and Noble Booksellers, 6707 Slide Road.  There will be a kick-off celebration at Barnes and Noble May 3, 2008, 2 – 4 pm.  The campaign is striving to reach a collection goal of 10,000 books to send to troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Horn of Africa.

  • Be sure the books you collect are in new condition.

  • Books of fiction, spy novels, thrillers, mysteries, crime stories, biographies, history, westerns or science fiction are wonderful choices.

  • The troops are comprised of more men than women.  Romance novels, textbooks, travel guides or scout manuals are NOT requested.  Please be very careful and discriminating with regard to subject matter selection, remembering the culture into which the books are being sent.

  • You are welcome to include a personal note with your book.

If you are interested in donating books, you may take them to Barnes and Noble as detailed above.  If you are interested in assisting the Communities in Schools’ students prepare the books for shipping, please contact the RSVP office at 742-2423.

Volunteer Opportunities:

VisitLubbock is currently seeking to build a volunteer base of West Texans to assist with various events and to act as the “face” of Lubbock to greet visitors arriving in our city.  They are seeking people with various areas of interest and expertise.  Lubbock hosts approximately 250 conventions/meetings and 100 sporting events each year.  In addition to these events, national and international tour groups come through Lubbock annually.

Meetings and Conventions:  volunteers are needed to be a Lubbock information table host, to assist at conference registrations, to be a meet-and-greet host or to assist with general office tasks.

Sporting Events:  volunteers are needed to assist with ticket-taking, score keeping, t-shirt sales or to assist in hospitality rooms.

Tourism:  volunteers are needed to serve as tour guides, meet-and-greet hosts or to help with information packet assembly.
If you are interested in any of these opportunities to promote our city, please call the RSVP office at 742-2423.

Family Promise is a temporary shelter for homeless families with children.  They house up to 14 people at a time (usually 3 or 4 families) and assist the residents with childcare, transportation, job assistance, counseling, parenting and other services.  Family Promise partners with local congregations to house families at night, provide meals and provide financial support.  Family Promise recently moved the families into a new day center and need volunteers to stay with families while staff members perform daily routines and run errands.  More volunteers are needed at the churches when the families are there, and more church congregations are needed to be host churches.  Family Promise would love to visit with volunteers who desire to serve in any capacity.  If you are interested, please contact the RSVP office at 742-2423.

Bender Terrace is seeking volunteers who will assist some of their residents who have special needs.  If you are interested in learning more about these and other service opportunities, please contact the RSVP office at 742-2423.

South Plains Genealogical Society needs volunteers to work three-hour shifts in the genealogy section of the Mahon Library.  Volunteers are needed Monday – Saturday, 9 am – noon or Monday – Sunday, 1 – 4 pm.  Most volunteers work one shift per week.  Duties include:  assisting researchers find books or microfilm, answering the phone, re-shelving books and straightening shelves.  Training will be provided.  Experience is not required, and computer experience is helpful but not essential.  If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact the RSVP office at 742-2423.

To volunteer, or for more information about these or other volunteer positions, please call the RSVP office at 742-2423.

HOW do I join RSVP?

Becoming a member of RSVP is simple as long as you are at least 55 and have some time to volunteer. Just call the office at 742-2423 and chat with Karon McDowell about your interests. If you are not certain what you would like to do, we can mention several current volunteer opportunities and send you a list of the sort of jobs which RSVP members are presently doing to whet your appetite. If you have a special skill or talent that you would like to utilize, we will search to find just the right job for you. Just mail in the enrollment form (requires Adobe Reader) and we will call you!
