June 2008Thank you to over 100 senior
citizens and 21 Lubbock agencies who participated in the RSVP Annual
Spring Forum that was held April 24, 2008. We had excellent
speakers who presented pertinent information regarding senior services.
I would like to express my appreciation to Pete Lara, Alice Garcia, O.B.
Brooks and Paul Moore from South Plains Association of Governments, who
participated in the panel discussion on Medicare/Medicaid; Jess
Peterson who presented information regarding long-term health and
housing choices; Aida Martinez for enlightening us on “2-1-1”; Ken Horn
who broached the very difficult discussion of Living Wills vs. Do Not
Resuscitate and Powers of Attorney with great knowledge, sincerity and
compassion; Terry Richardson and Kassie Pierce who spoke about Social
Security and SSI. Thank you all so very much for sharing your
knowledge and time. A big thank you goes to The Country Cut-Ups
for our lunchtime entertainment. You are amazing! Thank you,
RSVP Advisory Council for your leadership, wisdom and for being a
constant source of help. The Spring Forum is an annual event, so if you
missed it this year, we hope you will make plans to attend in 2009.
Volunteer Opportunities:
Catholic Family Services Main Office
is in need of volunteers to serve on a regular basis in the following
areas: interviewing clients who need assistance, completing
paperwork for clients who need emergency assistance, stocking the food
pantry (this task requires light lifting) and preparing groceries for
clients. Catholic Family Services (CFS) also needs people who have
experience writing grants. If you enjoy “on-call” assignments, CFS
needs volunteers to assist with mailings. If you are interested in
any of these areas of service, please contact the RSVP office at
742-2423.
We-CAN, Inc. is a “one-stop-shop”
center for the homeless and economically challenged citizens of Lubbock.
We-CAN’s mission is to build and maintain a broad network of accessible
community services to transition individuals and families from
homelessness, or at risk of becoming homeless, to maximum
self-sufficiency through proven supportive housing strategies.
Volunteers who are sensitive and possess a compassionate heart are
needed to greet clients needing help and to direct clients to the
appropriate agencies for counseling meetings. Having a background
in interviewing and triaging would be helpful but not necessary.
Volunteers are needed Wednesday mornings from 8:30am – noon. Lunch
will be provided. If you are interested in volunteering with
We-CAN, please contact the RSVP office at 742-2423.
To
volunteer, or for more information about these or other volunteer
positions, please call the RSVP office at 742-2423.
HOW do I join RSVP?
Becoming a member of RSVP is simple as long as you are at least 55 and have some time to volunteer. Just call the office at 742-2423 and chat with Karon McDowell about your interests. If
you are not certain what you would like to do, we can mention several current volunteer opportunities and send you a list of the sort of jobs which RSVP members are presently doing to whet your appetite. If you have a special skill or talent that you would like to utilize, we will search to find just the right job for you. Just mail in the
enrollment form
(requires Adobe Reader) and we will call you!
