June 2009
MHMR, Lubbock Regional Mental Health Mental Retardation Center
has several facilities in our community, and each location is in need of
the compassionate service that our precious volunteers can provide.
The 10th Street location needs volunteers for the occasional envelope
stuffing for special events that occur several times per year. The
Children and Adolescent Clinic would benefit from having a greeter in
the lobby while parents/children are waiting for their appointments.
Help is also needed to organize charts during clinic; clinic is held
three times per week.
The 38th Street location needs volunteers to assist with parties at the
Center for their clients during the holidays. This location provides a
great many outdoor activities and projects, and volunteers would be a
tremendous blessing.
There are eleven group homes in our community. The residents would love
to have someone read to them, visit, play games and do crafts with them.
They love the socialization that visitors afford them. For a volunteer
to do “grandmotherly/grandfatherly” activities with them, would thrill
their hearts.
The Sunrise Canyon location is in need of volunteers to assist as
greeters in the out-patient clinic.
If you are interested in any of these volunteer opportunities, please
contact the RSVP office at 743-7787, and we will tell you how to reach
one of the MHMR Directors.
Other Volunteer Opportunities:
Ronald McDonald House Family Rooms provide a home away from home for families of critically ill children who are receiving treatment at UMC and Covenant Women’s and Children’s Hospital. The two Family Rooms provide a nurturing, cozy haven inside the hospital. Families use the rooms to rest, reflect, eat, do laundry and shower. They are currently in need of caring, mature and compassionate volunteers to work in these Family Rooms. Volunteers work 3-hour shifts, greeting visitors, making coffee and cookies, performing light duties and watching over the families. Training and orientation are provided. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and must receive a TB test (provided by the hospital) in order to begin. If you are interested in this volunteer opportunity, please call RSVP at 743-7787, and we will introduce you to the appropriate contact at the Ronald McDonald House.
