July 2005

“Changing the next generation, one mother at a time” is the challenging motto of MY FATHER’S HOUSE LUBBOCK (MFHL), 1510 S. Loop 289. The organization ministers to women in need while they receive mental, emotional, spiritual, educational, and vocational support to change the direction of their lives, restore hope, and empower their future and that of their children.

My Father’s House believes that teaching the child begins with teaching mothers effective parenting skills, self-sufficiency, self-appreciation and the value of both education and work. Their goal is to respond to the desperate needs of homeless and poverty-impacted women, especially those with children. The plan includes Classroom Training, an intense program of training in Christian life skills interwoven through practical instruction, education and mentoring by a Christian woman for up to one year.

My Father’s House furnishes safe and dependable housing for women and children at risk while the mothers complete classes and vocational training. A Living and Learning Center provides 18 two-bedroom apartments for housing and training the women. A duty roster will schedule combined work and learning opportunities designed to reduce the center's maintenance expense while residents are trained for five in-demand occupations. Women who want to attend college for additional employment advancement are encouraged and helped to seek scholarships.
The Learning Center will produce a pool of trained applicants for local and area jobs with a new work ethic, new skills, and a willingness to work. They will be prepared for a needed occupation through a community school or the in-house instruction for service occupation employment with a corporate partner in Lubbock. Partnerships between MFHL and area employers offer participants a conduit into full-time employment.

"Thee House Keeper" auxiliary is now being formed, and you can be a charter member. No matter what your age, stage or work situation, there is a place for you to serve. They have planted a garden and are hoping to be canning and freezing this summer. Volunteers may be needed on short notice, but those with experience would be welcomed. They also have several sewing projects and would like to have volunteers “on call” when the fabric is received. Let RSVP help you to learn more and see just where your talent is needed and welcomed!

OTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

LUBBOCK STATE SCHOOL, N. University and Loop 289, has a lot of flower beds that need tending. If you are an early riser and would be interested in going out early once a week before it gets too hot to pull weeds, you would really be appreciated. Perhaps you could get a couple of friends together and actually adopt a particular bed to check on once a week or so. Plenty of tools are available for your use.

FAMILY COACHING, 3305 - 81st Street, Suite H, is a place where disturbed families may come for guidance through volunteer family coaches. Volunteer coach training covers two and a half days, usually on a Thursday evening (6-9pm), and Friday and Saturday from 9am-6pm. It is a time to meet others, to reflect upon one’s own strengths, and learn the Family Coaching process. The cost of the training is $50 which includes all meals and materials. Coaches are assigned no more than two families at any given time and each coaching session usually lasts one to one and a half hours. Families normally finish the process in three sessions. Therefore, a volunteer coach would normally spend one hour to three hours per week reconnecting a family by coaching. Think about helping the world, one family at a time.

To volunteer, or for more information about these or other volunteer positions, please call the RSVP office at 742-2423.
