BREEDLOVE DEHYDRATED FOODS, located at North Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd and North Loop 289, is dedicated to providing low cost food to other non-profit organizations for use in hunger relief projects both here and abroad. It is the only vegetable dehydration facility in the world solely dedicated to providing products to those who cannot provide food for themselves. Some of our local agricultural products will not sell commercially because they may have blemishes—imperfections that do not affect the taste and nutritional value, only the appearance. Those products were previously discarded. But for the last nine years, truckloads of surplus, unmarketable vegetables are sent to Breedlove Dehydrated Foods each month and processed to be made shelf-stable so that they can be stored until needed and more easily transported.

Hunger is still a desperate problem for millions of people around the world. Even developed countries like the United States are not immune to the affects of starvation and malnourishment. Breedlove’s Harvest Pro Vegetable Blend has been used worldwide for famine relief, disaster relief, for orphanages, in schools and to feed refugees. Nutrients are also added to their foods to help combat malnutrition. Harvest Pro's two-year long shelf life and nutritional value make it well suited for a variety of feeding programs. A small two-pound bag added to water can provide fifty bowls of nutritious soup. Dehydrated food is also easier to transport than other kinds of foods. Over a million servings can fit on one container and, because Breedlove is a non-profit agency, the cost is much lower than most other kinds of food. Breedlove Dehydrated Foods works with the U.S. Government, non-profits and many other organizations to get food to where it's needed. They have been involved in places that you hear about on the news such as Kososvo and Afghanistan and quietly provide hope in many countries on every continent except Antarctica. The International Food Relief Partnership program is just one way their food is used internationally.

Breedlove has recently added a Flavored & Fortified Nutritional Supplement to their product list. By taking powdered milk and adding fortification and flavoring, they have developed a milk drink that is nutritionally comparable to Ensure, at a fraction of the price! Many people, especially seniors, are on limited or fixed incomes and struggle to meet their nutritional needs. Flavored & Fortified Nutritional Supplement (FFNS) may be the answer for those who need a supplement, but are struggling to make ends meet. It can be purchased by individuals as well as nursing homes, assisted living centers, and food banks.

Breedlove provides nourishment to the world—and to you!

OTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

FAMILY COACHING, 3305 81st Street, Suite H, works with families and individuals to provide intensive “coaching” sessions to resolve a crisis or conflict. All members of the family are included in the sessions taking place in a three or four day period, averaging between 20-30 hours. Their focus is to help families become cohesive and to help them to build strong family teams that will WIN at life. Potential coaches will be thoroughly trained to do this job and the training can be arranged to meet your schedule. Your caring help might be just what a family needs to handle the stresses of life.

LAKESIDE REHABILITATION AND CARE CENTER, 4306 24th Street, would love some extra assistance on three occasions throughout the week. First, volunteers are needed for about an hour on Mondays at 2:00 p.m. to start a movie and serve popcorn. Also, it would be nice to have someone read the current news to about a dozen of their residents in a central area at 10:30 in the morning on Monday. If you are a member of a group or have family members that might like to put a smile on the faces of nursing home residents, how about helping to serve refreshments at 3:00 one afternoon a week. Several jobs for you to consider—and no one would appreciate you more!

To volunteer, or for more information about these or other volunteer positions, please call the RSVP office at 742-2423.

HOW do I join RSVP?
Becoming a member of RSVP is simple as long as you are at least 55 and have some time to volunteer. Just call the office at 742-2423 and chat with Ronda Casey or Bonne Phillips about your interests.
