As we continue our columns concerning various areas of hospital volunteering, the second site we will discuss is the Health Sciences Center School of Medicine Volunteer Services program at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. Since its beginning in 1988, over 2400 volunteers have served the Health Sciences Center by supporting it’s ongoing mission of providing the highest quality education, research, and patient care to people of Lubbock and West Texas.
Volunteers at the Health Sciences Center do not serve an inpatient population, but actively participate in the School of Medicine's fourteen Outpatient Clinics, Basic Science Departments and support service areas. You may choose to be a greeter, clinic or clerical assistant, lab assistant or a Red Raider Reader (reading to children as they await their doctor’s appointment). Whatever you choose to do, you will receive thorough training in a general orientation session as well as specific training in the department of your choice.
While volunteering, you will wear a red shirt, vest or smock provided by Volunteer Services for a nominal $6 charge to clearly identify you as a volunteer in your work area. Each volunteer is scheduled to work at least one 3-4 hour shift each week. When you work your shift, you may also receive a ticket that qualifies you for a free meal in the cafeteria.
TUHSC is located on 4th Street and Indiana facing north towards 4th Street. The facility is connected by walkways to the University Medical Center hospital on the south side. Parking permits enable volunteers to park in visitor and student parking areas. Come try a different kind of medical volunteering!
OTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:
SPAG'S AREA AGENCY ON
AGING, 58th and P, would love a few volunteers who are comfortable using a calculator. You would only need to work at your convenience a few hours a week to verify the numbers on work sheets submitted by various providers of services to the senior population on the South Plains. This would be a sit-down job on the days and times of your choosing with the parking very close to the building. Let's keep those fingers moving!
WOMEN’S PROTECTIVE SERVICES provides prevention, intervention, support and assistance for victims of family violence and their dependents. Their office is currently seeking volunteers to help with a wide range of basic administrative/clerical duties. If you don’t want office work, there are several other ways you can help. Their Children’s Programs would love a caring adult role model to interact with youngsters, or you might take clients to get clothing or help shop for and distribute groceries to clients, or clean, organize and do yard work at the shelter. Whether you have just a couple of hours a month, or several hours a week, you can help families at a difficult time in their lives.
To volunteer, or for more information about these or other volunteer positions, please call the RSVP office at 742-2423.
HOW do I join RSVP?
