Texas Attorney General’s Office Seeks Volunteers for Lubbock Child Support Offices

Lubbock RSVP has recently started working with the Attorney General’s Office Child Support Division in Lubbock.  You can impact the lives of Lubbock children by volunteering at the Lubbock child support offices.  Since working with Judy McEachern, the Regional Outreach Coordinator, my eyes have been opened to the extent of the responsibilities of the Child Support Division.  The Lubbock child support offices handle more than 26,000 child support cases.

The Attorney General’s Child Support Division is directed by state and federal law to assist Texas families who currently receive or have received public assistance and families who request child support services.  Services include locating absent parents; establishing paternity for children born to unmarried parents; establishing, enforcing and modifying child and medical support orders; and collecting and distributing child support payments.

Each year, volunteers across the state help the Office of the Attorney General serve Texas families and children more efficiently and effectively.  Ms. McEachern emphasizes that volunteering can be beneficial to people from different walks of life, including individuals seeking new job skills, student-interns seeking to satisfy course requirements, retirees and other Texans who simply want to give back to their communities.

Volunteers are needed in 3-4 hour shifts anytime during a regular workday week, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Duties include data entry, filing, and assisting attorneys and child support officers.  If you are interested in impacting children’s lives this could be your ideal job.  Call Judy McEachern at 761-4706 and the RSVP office at 742-2423 for more information.

OTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

The National Ranching Heritage Center needs volunteers who can sew to help them make costumes for their special event days.  They have a Snack-N-Sew group that meets regularly at the Ranching Center, 3121 4th Street, on one Saturday every month from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  The next meeting dates are August 25th, September 15th, and October 20th.

The Ronald McDonald House needs volunteers in so many ways to assist families during medical crises with their children.  Your help is needed in the house with housekeeping chores, greeting visitors, and in the office with general filing and answering the phone.  They would like to have volunteers who could work a few hours a week on a regular schedule to make the House a home.

The Garrison Institute on Aging is looking for 2 or 3 volunteers to help staff their new “Help and Hope Caregiver Library” that opened on June 1st.  Volunteers should be interested in helping community members locate caregiving resources in the library and online.  Volunteers with basic computer skills and experience using the internet are preferred, but they are willing to train you.  Volunteers may work 2-5 hours per week in the morning or afternoon at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Garrison Institute on Aging, 6640 S. Quaker, Suite E.

Covenant Medical Center and Covenant Medical Center-Lakeside have several openings for new volunteers.  They especially need escort messengers (delivering flowers, mail, etc.) and volunteers in both the surgery waiting rooms, and labor and delivery waiting room areas.  Volunteers in waiting areas serve as liaisons between the hospital staff and the patients’ families.  These volunteers provide great comfort to the families anxious to hear news regarding their loved ones.

To volunteer, or for more information about these or other volunteer positions, please call the RSVP office at 742-2423.
