September 2004
HIGHLAND MEDICAL CENTER is September’s volunteer station in our look at hospital service opportunities. Highland employs 205 individuals serving 123 licensed beds and covers 33,752 square feet. With the emergence of managed care, the hospital’s focus in the last few years has shifted to that of a more family centered approach, including the addition of an Obstetrical Unit, a Skill Nursing and Rehabilitation facility, and Out-patient Endoscopy services. Hence, the need for more volunteers to provide that personal touch.
John Faulkner, Highland’s CEO, has said that the services provided by the volunteers are invaluable to the facility and that he would like to see volunteers in even more areas throughout the hospital. Highland currently utilizes 37 volunteers hospital-wide who provide a gift of time and talent that adds a special dimension of personal service and care to their patients. Some of their duties include assisting in the surgery waiting room, greeting newcomers to the facility, escorting patients and guests to different departments and offices, operating a gift shop, etc. The monies made through the program’s gift shop benefits the Lubbock community as generous donations have been made to such agencies as Ronald McDonald House, Lubbock Meals on Wheels, Children’s Protective Services, Childbirth Network, and the South Plains Food Bank. Volunteers may also provide valuable assistance by filing, stuffing envelopes, and delivering reports to different departments.
Highland’s volunteers are furnished their jackets free of charge when volunteering and, on the day that the volunteer works, he/she may eat in the hospital cafeteria free. Additionally, Highland volunteers receive a complimentary membership to Highland’s Chapter of Senior Circle, a senior outreach program focused on providing programs on fitness, wellness, social activities, holiday parties, travel opportunities, and many benefits both locally and nationally. The dues for the volunteers are a mere $3.00 annually. Highland is a small hospital with close-in parking and many opportunities for you to find just the right volunteer position in an area that interests you. Think about it!
