September 2009

Lubbock Regional MHMR Center is currently working to develop a Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) in Lubbock.  PACE programs are designed to address the long-term health care needs of our elderly population while continuing to live in their homes.  PACE combines preventive primary care, acute long-term care and social services that are essential for participants to be able to continue living independently in the community.  PACE programs operate day health centers that provide a medical clinic, therapies, transportation, medications, meals and activities designed to improve quality of life.

Eligibility requirements of a PACE program:

  • Must be 55 years of age or older
  • Must reside in Lubbock County
  • Must be determined eligible for nursing facility services
  • Must be able to live safely in the community at the time of enrollment

The PACE center will be centrally located in Lubbock and plans to open early 2010.

RSVP will be seeking volunteers to fill several roles at PACE.  Volunteers will be needed in the following areas:  reading to PACE participants, playing games with the participants and assisting with activities during the holidays to make them special occasions.  Volunteers will also be needed to help with mailings.  If you are interested in any of these volunteer opportunities with PACE, please contact the RSVP office at 743-RSVP (7787).  We would love to have some volunteers signed up and ready for service when the doors open in early 2010.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Breedlove Foods, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to feeding the hungry (locally and worldwide), is seeking volunteers who are interested in regularly scheduled opportunities.  Duties include receiving and directing phone calls, taking messages, receiving and directing visitors, and periodic light clerical work.  The workload is light and knowledge of computers is not required.  The volunteer workstation is located at the reception counter in the lobby of the Breedlove facility, 1818 N. MLK Boulevard.  Time schedules will be developed with each individual volunteer.  If you are interested in this volunteer opportunity, please contact the RSVP office at 743-RSVP (7787).

The Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC), a non-profit agency under the umbrella of the Lubbock Regional MHMR, is seeking volunteers to assist in the office.  They need someone to answer the phone, do light clerical work including filing/organizational duties and assist with intake forms.  Computer skills are not required.  The ADRC will work with your schedule, and they will provide any necessary training.  They are located at 1400 Ave. O, in the old Presbyterian Church building, now called “The Legacy”.

To volunteer, or for more information about these or other volunteer positions, please call the RSVP office at 743-7787.

HOW do I join RSVP?

Becoming a member of RSVP is simple as long as you are at least 55 and have some time to volunteer. Just call the office at 743-77873 and chat with Karon McDowell about your interests. If you are not certain what you would like to do, we can mention several current volunteer opportunities and send you a list of the sort of jobs which RSVP members are presently doing to whet your appetite. If you have a special skill or talent that you would like to utilize, we will search to find just the right job for you. Just mail in the enrollment form (requires Adobe Reader) and we will call you!
