October 2004
University Medical Center (UMC) is our spotlighted volunteer station for October. According to Volunteer Coordinator Susan Bailey, the mission of University Medical Center consists of three equal and distinct, but interrelated elements. These elements are: the provision of safe high quality health care; the clinical and financial support of graduate medical education; and the maintenance of a strong financial base for UMC through prudent and conservative business practices. The vision of UMC is to serve the patients in the best teaching hospital in the country and volunteers are helping the hospital to achieve its goals.
UMC offers a lot to the community, but also receives a lot through the help of their strong volunteer force. Volunteers work at the information desk and may serve as messengers, who deliver mail, flowers, patient mail and e-mail. Greeters at UMC escort patients or family members to their desired location. Caring folks are needed to cuddle babies and even visit patients that might not have family members in town to look in on them. Volunteers are always a help in waiting rooms and the gift shop. Practically all parts of UMC’s medical system utilizes volunteers, whether it is in Dimensions, the women’s health center; South West Cancer Center; or HealthPoint, their state of the art fitness and wellness center. Auxiliary members even play a part in the education of future medical students as they pop corn in the UMC cafeteria. All of the proceeds from the popcorn sales are contributed to a scholarship fund, available for all UMC employees and their family members that are pursuing a medical degree. UMC even has a program for four-legged volunteers with a pet therapy program. Certified pet therapy dogs visit the patients and bring a lot of love and affection to patients, staff and even visitors.
The volunteers at UMC not only provide service, they also share in people’s joys and sorrows and become a big part of the UMC family. If you would like to join this “family”, please call the RSVP office at 742-2423 for more information.
OTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:
OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY
GENERAL, 401 50th St., would like several volunteers who enjoy filing for a short-term assignment. They are moving and consolidating their files, so the folders would just need to be taken from two areas to one large room close by and realphabetized. Parking is close to the door and you may work any time of the day from 8-5 and any weekday. This would be a good job for a few friends who might like to work together on a simple job at their convenience for the next month or two.
FAMILY
COACHING, 3305 81st Street, Suite H, works with families and individuals to provide intensive “coaching” sessions to resolve a crisis or conflict. All members of the family are included in the sessions. Their focus is to help families become cohesive and to help them to build strong family teams that will WIN at life. Potential coaches will be thoroughly trained to do this job and the training can be arranged to meet your schedule. If you feel that the deterioration of families is one of our nation’s biggest problems and biggest need, please consider helping them to succeed.
To volunteer, or for more information about these or other volunteer positions, please call the RSVP office at 742-2423.
