November 2002

One of RSVP’s newest volunteer stations is the Lubbock Fire Department (LFD). RSVP will seek volunteers to provide support for the men and women who are always there for us and make our city a safer place to live. Volunteers will assist the department in carrying out their mission to protect life, property, health, and the environment of our city by delivering quality Fire and Life Safety Services. Of course, RSVP members will not be asked to fight fires, but there are many positions in the area of administration, computer input, and community education that would be ideal for volunteers who would like to work on a flexible schedule.

One of the greatest goals of the fire department is to keep from having to be called to a fire. PREVENTION is foremost in the minds of all firefighters and RSVP volunteers can help to engender awareness in our community by educating the public on what they need to know to keep their homes safe. One of the most important tools for prevention is adequately functioning smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and the fire department’s goal is to see that every home in Lubbock is adequately protected.

This month the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program will begin a program in collaboration with the LFD that can have a great impact on families that are lacking these critical safety devices in their homes. The Fire Department has received a grant that has allowed them to purchase hundreds of home smoke and carbon monoxide detectors for specific zip codes in Lubbock. However, they do not currently have the time or the manpower to install all of these devices. RSVP is looking for about 15 good men—and women—who are willing to take some simple training for about an hour and then go in teams of three people to install the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in homes approved for the program. Volunteers will also provide written material and chat with the residents about fire safety. Many of these recipients will be senior citizens who are most vulnerable to this danger. This is a program that can truly make a life or death difference. Please call the RSVP office, 742-2423, for more information on ways you would like to help the Lubbock Fire Department and our very own “Homeland Security” project.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY currently has 13 houses under construction. Most of the houses need trim work, some drywall, painting, cabinetwork, and landscaping. Habitat has good crews on the weekends, but in order to have the homes completed in time for the families to be able to move in by Thanksgiving, they need help during the week also. Work goes on at the site every day from 9 to 5. Won’t you help to make this a truly wonderful Thanksgiving for some very hardworking and worthy families?

FAMILY COACHING, 3305 81st Street, Suite H, works with families and individuals to provide intensive “coaching” sessions to resolve a crisis or conflict. All members of the family are included in the sessions taking place in a three or four day period, averaging between 20-30 hours. Their focus is to help families become cohesive and to help them to build strong family teams that will WIN at life. Potential coaches will be thoroughly trained to do this job and the training can be arranged to meet your schedule. The holidays are often tough on family relationships. Your help might be just what a family needs to handle the stresses of life.

To volunteer, or for more information about these or other volunteer positions, please call the RSVP office at 742-2423.
