November 2005
Last month we
discussed touching young lives, this month we are focusing on folks our
age or older. All over the city, SENIOR CENTERS could use your
time, energy and experience to make their programs meaningful. All of
them have lunch programs that would love your help to get weekday meals
ready for those who attend the centers. Some of them have special
programs, game days, education classes, and craft classes that would
love your expertise. If you are good at sewing, knitting or crocheting,
ceramics, have computer knowledge or any other skill you think might be
of interest to seniors, think about sharing your time with those at a
senior center and adding to their enjoyment of life. The senior centers
in Lubbock are:
19th Street
Senior Center, 2001 19th Street (across from Lubbock High School),
needs volunteers to help out with lots of special programs, ceramics and
crafts, library assistance, do occasional office work, help with lunch,
and run various types of fun games. The Senior Computer Education
Program originated here and is still a thriving part of the center.
Maggie Trejo
Supercenter, 3200 Amherst, uses volunteers to help out with sewing
classes, set up activities, call Spanish Bingo, run balloon volleyball
games, serve Food Bank produce, and to clean up after lunch.
Copper Rawlings
Senior Center, 213 40th St., needs help to set up, serve and cleanup
at lunchtime.
Homestead/Silver Village, 5401 56th St. (right next to the South
Plains Mall), would like a person to do various crafts with their folks,
help set up and serve lunch, make coffee, or do filing in the office.
Mae Simmons
Senior Center, 23rd and Oak, would love volunteers to help serve
Food Bank produce and lunch any day of the week.
All of these
centers are open five days a week and, when you volunteer over the lunch
hour, a nutritious meal is also served. As you can see, there is
probably a center in your area of town. If you would like to get to know
other seniors, this may be the place for you!
OTHER VOLUNTEER
OPPORTUNITIES:
KTXT-TV,
17th and Indiana, would really appreciate a receptionist to greet people
and answer the phone at the front desk every Wednesday morning while the
staff is in a meeting. Volunteers would need to arrive by 8:45 for a
brief training session and should be finished by 11:15. Parking is right
in front of the door for your convenience.
AMERICAN HEART
ASSOCIATION, 4630 50th Street, Suite 400, would like a volunteer or
two to be on a regular schedule in the office to answer phones, help
with mailings, make data entries (if desired), and just do general
office projects. Probably no more than four hours a week would be needed
on your schedule any day, any time.
To
volunteer, or for more information about these or other volunteer positions, please call the RSVP office at 742-2423.
HOW do I join RSVP?
Becoming a member of RSVP is simple as long as you are at least 55 and have some time to volunteer. Just call the office at 742-2423 and chat with Ronda Casey or Bonne Phillips about your interests. If you are not certain what you would like to do, we can mention several current volunteer opportunities and send you a list of the sort of jobs which RSVP members are presently doing to whet your appetite. If you have a special skill or talent that you would like to utilize, we will search to find just the right job for you. Just mail in the
enrollment form
(requires Adobe Reader) and we will call you!
