MY STORY
By Katie Motter
My husband and I lived on a farm near a small town in southwest Nebraska.
There were nursing homes but no such thing as a retirement home for hundreds
of miles from our small community. We searched for a retirement home to our
liking in Hawaii, California, Maryland and many places in between. A brochure
was put out by a chain of retirement homes and we investigated several.
Lubbock was one them.
When we came here to check it out, we drove into Lubbock in a sand storm. We
were sure no one would live here unless they were compelled to, but because
we were here and had reservations, we proceeded to investigate. We got into the
dining room at Carillon, called John Knox at that time, there we met with West Texas
hospitality. People came to our table to table to meet us, and we felt as if
we were still at home, instant camaraderie. Our quest was over.
That was twenty-five years ago. I lost my husband two years ago, but neither of us
ever regretted moving to Lubbock.
