Volunteer with La Paloma, Project Intercept, & Nominate a Senior
By Karon McDowell, director, Lead With Experience
La Paloma
La Paloma, a Program of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), serves people who are 55 or older who need medical and social supports that enable them to live in their homes and community as long as possible. La Paloma does this by providing a coordination of preventive, primary, acute and long-term care services that are unique to each participant.
There are endless possibilities of ways people from our community can volunteer their time to serve PACE participants. A volunteer can share a love of painting, dancing, sewing, singing and cooking.
Think about the hobbies in which you engage and consider sharing them with those being served at La Paloma. Four volunteer opportunities are open. The greeter receptionist is the first face of La Paloma to all visitors. This person receives phone calls and routes them to the appropriate staff person.
The transportation chaperone accompanies elderly clients riding the program’s transportation vehicle and assists them as they enter and exit the vehicle.
The client companion is available to assist participants in social, recreational and rehabilitative activities. This companion serves as an extra set of eyes watching over the participants in the activity room or during field trips or nature walks.
The inside gardener is the Volunteer with La Paloma, Project Intercept, & Nominate a Senior volunteer who shares a love and knowledge of plants as a means to maintain, water, trim and prune plants in the facility. La Paloma welcomes anyone who wishes to share time with others.
Help a neighbor in need by driving a cancer patient to treatment. The American Cancer Society needs you. This is a different kind of cancer drive – one which doesn’t ask for money, but for time. Carve out some of your time and use your car to drive a cancer patient to a potentially lifesaving treatment and home again. The society will work with your schedule during weekday hours. It takes so little time, but means so much. You will give someone peace of mind and help them along the road to recovery.
Project Intercept
LISD/Project Intercept has increased its student enrollment and desires to have senior volunteers assisting in the school office. Volunteers are greeters for walk-in visitors, guests and/or students. The school would also like for the volunteers to be able to do light office work and answer phones. The student population ranges from sixth through twelfth grades. If you would be willing to share your love and compassion with young people, this is the spot for you.
Salute to Senior Service
Seniors…you can always count on them…some things never change. The Great Generation has always gone above and beyond the call of duty. Lubbock RSVP has more than 700 senior citizen members who volunteer in excess of 100,000 hours/year in approximately 70 non-profits in Lubbock. Here is your chance to honor their efforts.
Nominate a senior volunteer for a Salute to Senior Service Award.
Home Instead, Inc. will make a $5,000 donation to the Salute to Senior Service winner’s designated nonprofit charity of choice. I bet you can think of numerous seniors you can nominate – even yourself. It can mean $5,000 to your favorite charity if you win, and just think how meaningful that would be to that organization. Visit SalutetoSeniorService.com or contact your local Home Instead Senior Care office at 806-281-4663 to place your nomination.
If you are interested in any of these volunteer opportunities, please give RSVP a call at 743-7787.
Today is a good day to volunteer!
HOW do I join RSVP?
Becoming a member of RSVP is simple as long as you are at least 55 and have some time to volunteer. Just call the office at 743-77873 and chat with Karon McDowell about your interests. If you are not certain what you would like to do, we can mention several current volunteer opportunities and send you a list of the sort of jobs which RSVP members are presently doing to whet your appetite. If you have a special skill or talent that you would like to utilize, we will search to find just the right job for you. Just mail in the enrollment form (requires Adobe Reader) and we will call you!
