Volunteer Opportunities
American Red Cross
The American Red Cross needs volunteers with various levels of service skills. Logistics support is a flexible position that can be done in the office or from home, during business hours or on weekends/evenings.
A volunteer could be responding to disasters, teaching and training others, offering administrative support, interacting with clients, interacting in the community, working with technology, and/or assisting with special events.
Another position will provide service to the Armed Forces by supporting them and interacting directly with these clients.
Other positions for volunteer service would include case worker, emergency services, trainer, clerical, and coordinator. Volunteers will meet new people, learn new skills, give back to others, have fun, and get to know their community.
Literacy Lubbock
Literacy Lubbock, located in the Mahon Library, is giving the gift of HOPE to Lubbock residents. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: GED Preparation Classes, English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes, Adult Literacy and the Dyslexia/Barton Program. Lead teachers and helpers are needed in classes, as well as tutors who work with clients one on one.
South Plains Food Bank
One in four children across the South Plains is at risk of going to bed hungry tonight. The South Plains Food Bank needs help to ensure that Lubbock children living at the Cricket Court apartments are fed each day. Monday through Friday 35-40 children come to the common room at the apartment building to be served a hot nutritious meal provided by the food bank.
South Plains Food Bank is in need of individuals or groups to help serve these children the food that has been prepared by the Kids Café staff. Serving time is from 5 to 6 p.m., but volunteers will need to arrive at 4:30 p.m. to prepare for service. Four volunteers each day, Monday through Friday, are needed.
If you are interested in any of these volunteer opportunities, please give RSVP a call at 743-7787.
Today is a good day to volunteer!
How do I join RSVP?
Becoming a member of RSVP is simple as long as you are at least 55 and have some time to volunteer. Just call the office at 743-77873 and chat with Karon McDowell about your interests. If you are not certain what you would like to do, we can mention several current volunteer opportunities and send you a list of the sort of jobs which RSVP members are presently doing to whet your appetite. If you have a special skill or talent that you would like to utilize, we will search to find just the right job for you. Just mail in the enrollment form (requires Adobe Reader) and we will call you!
